The Amalfi Coast is south of Naples, but the towns lack railway stations. You have four main ways to get there.

Our top pick: From Naples: Amalfi Coast Day Trip in Positano and Amalfi

Your options

  1. Ferry (seasonal): in the warm months, boats run from the Naples port area to Amalfi and Positano. It is the most scenic option, but schedules vary, so check them before you plan.
  2. Train and bus via Salerno: take a train from Naples to Salerno, then a SITA Sud bus or a ferry along the coast to Amalfi.
  3. Train and bus via Sorrento: the Circumvesuviana train from Naples runs to Sorrento in roughly an hour, where you can catch a SITA Sud bus along the cliff road to Positano and Amalfi.
  4. Private transfer: door to door, with no luggage handling and no changes, which is useful for a late arrival or a family.

Avoid midday summer buses: buses on the coast road can be packed and hot. Sit on the right when heading east for the sea view, and keep luggage light.
